Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I noticed hundreds of commitments on the website and yet I also read that this is a new program. How is this possible?

A. That is very observant, and a great question. Our program founder, Mark Helsel, has been involved in travel baseball for over 2 decades. During this time, he is credited with helping nearly 1,000 players to play baseball in college or professionally. The player commitments listed on our website are players Mark has helped when he was running his programs over the last 20 years.

Q: Can you explain in more detail the strategy of keeping coaches at the same age group year after year?

A: Sure! At Ambassadors Baseball, our coaches stay at a specific age group rather than moving up with the same players each season. This allows each coach to become a true expert in the developmental needs, skill sets, and mindset of that particular age level.

It also keeps things competitive and fresh for the players. Since they’ll have a new coach the following year, they have to re-earn their spot and make a great impression all over again. That helps prevent complacency and encourages players to stay motivated, focused, and hungry to improve.

This structure creates a healthy balance — experienced coaches who specialize deeply in one stage of development, and players who continually grow through new challenges and fresh perspectives.

Q: Can you explain more about the training provided?

A: Absolutely! Every player, parent, and coach in the Ambassadors Baseball program completes our video training series before they can participate. This ensures everyone understands the culture, expectations, and high standards that make our program truly special.

The comprehensive training course features short, easy-to-follow videos followed by quick quizzes — typically 18–20 in total. Topics include no profanity, proper dress code, personal hygiene (including no facial hair for players), punctuality, and professionalism on and off the field.

But it’s not just about rules — it’s about building unity and accountability. The training helps reduce drama, improve communication, and create a healthy team culture where coaches can coach, parents can support, and players can thrive. Everyone learns what excellence looks like, and how to live it out daily.

As a fun bonus, parents receive a special T-shirt upon graduation that proudly says, “I graduated from Ambassadors Elite with a 4.0!” It’s our way of celebrating their effort and showing that we’re all in this together — committed to excellence from the dugout to the stands.

Q: What are some of the advantages of playing with a national organization?

A: Great question — and one we hear a lot! Working with Ambassadors Baseball means you’re not out there trying to figure everything out on your own. You’ve got the full strength of a nationally recognized program — built on Mark Helsel’s 20+ years of experience in elite travel baseball — right behind you.

Simply put, having an organization like Ambassadors Baseball behind you means you get the structure, support, exposure, promotion and credibility you need to succeed — without having to reinvent the wheel.

Q: At what age group do teams start?

A: We start at 13 years old — the age where real baseball truly begins. Players are now on 60/90 fields, the same dimensions used in high school, college, and beyond, and they’re beginning to mature both physically and mentally.

We intentionally don’t start with younger age groups because we believe the early years of baseball should stay local, fun, and full of great memories — not long weekends and big expenses. Those “small field” years are special, and we want kids to enjoy them without the pressure of travel baseball too soon.

Once players reach 13U, it’s the perfect time to step into a more structured, competitive, and developmental environment — one designed to prepare them for the next level the right way.

Q: How do Ambassadors Baseball coaches find their players?

A: Great question! Every Ambassadors coach is responsible for building their own roster — and how they do it depends a bit on the age group.

For 13U coaches, it’s the most challenging (and exciting) part of the job because they’re literally starting fresh with an entirely new team each year. They find players through tryouts, camps, showcases, and good old-fashioned networking.

Coaches at 14U and above have a big advantage — they can scout younger Ambassadors teams throughout the season and identify players who might be a great fit for the following year. This creates a natural pipeline of talent and keeps the competitive standard high across all age levels.

This approach also ensures that coaches have full control over their roster rather than being told who has to be on their team. That flexibility allows each coach to build their dream team — a group that fits their style, standards, and vision — creating a positive and rewarding experience for everyone involved.

It’s a system that rewards proactive coaches, sharp eyes for talent, and relationships built on trust and reputation — all key traits of an Ambassadors coach.

Q: How many players are on a roster?

A: Our head coaches have the flexibility to build their rosters — but we’ve found that balance and strategy are key. Our recommended model includes 4 outfielders, 3 middle infielders, 3 corner infielders, and 2 catchers, for a total of 12 position players.

Of course, some of those players may also pitch, and many teams choose to add a few “pitcher-only” players to round out the roster. That approach provides depth while keeping the lineup manageable so every player gets meaningful playing time.

This strategic roster planning has consistently proven to work well — it keeps teams competitive, players engaged, and ensures that everyone enjoys the experience without overcrowding the bench.

Q: Are fees different for pitcher-only players?

A: Nope — all players pay the same program fee, regardless of position. Every member of an Ambassadors Baseball team plays an important role and is expected to make a full, 100% commitment to the team.

We don’t separate fees based on position because we believe in team equality. Whether a player’s primary role is pitching, catching, or playing every day in the field, each one contributes to the team’s success and benefits from the same training, development, and experience.

At the end of the day, everyone’s part of the same mission — representing Ambassadors Baseball with excellence on and off the field.

Q: Can I play on multiple teams?

A: We understand that players love to play as much baseball as possible — and we love that passion! However, our program is designed with a healthy and complete schedule that provides plenty of games and development opportunities. For that reason, we don’t recommend players take on additional teams during the same season.

When a player commits to Ambassadors Baseball, that commitment is 100%. Our teams rely on dependable rosters and consistent participation, so players aren’t permitted to miss Ambassadors events in order to play elsewhere.

That said, we’ll never stand in the way of a player who has an opportunity to play for another team outside of their commitment window with us. As long as it doesn’t interfere with their responsibilities to their Ambassadors team, we fully support players continuing to grow and enjoy the game.

Q: How many games do teams play in a season?

A: Our teams typically play in 5–6 events per season, which works out to around 40–50 games across two seasons (summer and fall). We’ve found that this schedule strikes the perfect balance between development, competition, and rest.

Playing more than that often leads to burnout, fatigue, or unnecessary travel — and that’s not what we’re about. Our focus is quality over quantity: competitive events, meaningful innings, and players who are fresh, focused, and improving throughout the year.

Q: How does the organization help players get recruited?

A: We take a holistic approach to player development — one that focuses not just on athletic ability, but on the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual growth of every athlete. Our goal is to develop well-rounded young men who stand out for their character as much as their talent.

When that process is done right, college coaches notice. Players who come through the Ambassadors Baseball system are typically more prepared, more disciplined, and more mature — all traits that make them highly desirable to college programs.

We also maintain strong connections with hundreds of college coaches and professional scouts across the country. When we believe a player is ready for exposure, we have no problem getting the right eyes on him. Our reputation, network, and proven development model open doors — but it’s the player’s preparation and character that make those doors stay open.

Q: I read that Ambassadors teams prefer to play on college campuses instead of tournaments. Who makes those arrangements?

A: You’re right — whenever possible, we prefer for our teams to play on college campuses rather than in traditional tournaments. It’s a better environment for exposure, player experience, and overall development.

With our established relationships and years of experience, we’re able to connect teams with on-campus events that not only provide great competition but also give players a real feel for the college baseball atmosphere.

Q: How are player fees determined?

A: We’ve developed an incredible budgeting software tool that takes all the guesswork out of setting player fees. Coaches simply enter their team’s expenses — things like tournaments, uniforms, travel costs, and more — and the software automatically calculates the correct player fee amount.

Our coaches love this feature because it gives them flexibility and control. They can adjust numbers, compare options, and find the exact right balance for their specific team’s needs.

There’s no cookie-cutter approach at Ambassadors Baseball — every team is unique, and our system ensures that fees are accurate, transparent, and fair for everyone involved.

Q: Can you explain in more detail the I.D.P. (Individual Development Plan) that each player gets? Specifically, who creates that for the player?

A: Absolutely! Every player in the Ambassadors Baseball program receives an Individual Development Plan, or I.D.P. — a personalized roadmap designed to help them grow in every area of the game and in life.

Each I.D.P. is created collaboratively between the player and their coach, with guidance from our organizational leadership when needed. Coaches evaluate the player’s strengths, identify areas for improvement, and outline specific goals and action steps. Players then take ownership by tracking their progress and holding themselves accountable throughout the season.

Every plan includes key development categories such as:

i. Physical: strength, conditioning, nutrition, and recovery

ii. Skill-based: hitting, fielding, throwing, pitching, and base running

iii. Mental: focus, confidence, attitude, and resilience

iv. Leadership & Character: teamwork, communication, discipline, and faith

What truly sets Ambassadors Baseball apart is how deeply we care about the individual goals of each player. Yes, we value team success — but we never lose sight of the fact that every athlete has personal dreams, often including the opportunity to play college or professional baseball.

Our founder says it best: “Teams don’t get scholarships — players do.” That’s why we pour so much effort into helping each young man become the very best version of himself, on the field and off.

Q: How can we be a good team if we don’t practice?

A: That’s a fair question — and one we hear often! The truth is, our success isn’t based on the number of practices we hold; it’s based on the quality of preparation each player brings to the field.

Our players are older, more mature, and highly motivated athletes who take personal responsibility for their development. Each one has an Individual Development Plan (I.D.P.) and access to structured training resources that guide their growth outside of team practices. By the time we come together for events, our players are already prepared — physically, mentally, and fundamentally.

Coaches use pre-tournament sessions, on-field warmups, and game situations as teaching opportunities. It’s a model built on accountability and professionalism — much like college baseball — and it consistently produces competitive, disciplined teams that play the game the right way.

Simply put, we may not practice as often as local teams, but we prepare better than most.

Q: How are players expected to train individually between events?

A: Great question! Since our teams don’t practice together regularly, we place a strong emphasis on individual accountability and preparation. Every player in the program receives a personalized Individual Development Plan (I.D.P.) that outlines specific goals and action steps — so they always know exactly what to work on.

Players are expected to train consistently between events, focusing on areas such as strength and conditioning, hitting reps, defensive work, throwing programs, mobility, and recovery. Many players also submit video clips or progress updates to their coaches, allowing for feedback and ongoing adjustments to their I.D.P.

This model teaches players to take ownership of their growth — just like college and professional athletes do. It’s not about doing more; it’s about doing the right work with purpose and consistency.

Q: My travel team guarantees me a roster spot from season to season, but Ambassadors Baseball does not. That makes me feel like the program isn’t committed to me — and that scares me.

A: We totally understand how you feel — that concern is completely natural. But here’s the truth: our system is designed for your benefit, not against it.

At Ambassadors Baseball, no one is guaranteed a roster spot from year to year because we believe in keeping our environment competitive, fair, and earned. This approach keeps players motivated to keep improving rather than getting comfortable or complacent. Every returning player has the chance to make the team again — and every new player has the chance to earn it.

Our commitment to you is actually much deeper than a guaranteed spot. We’re committed to developing you as a person and a player, helping you grow in skill, character, and preparation so that you’re always in demand — not just with us, but with college coaches and scouts down the road.

So while we don’t guarantee a roster spot, what we do guarantee is opportunity — and a culture that rewards hard work, growth, and excellence.

Q: One of the problems I’ve experienced in travel baseball is guest players coming in for big events and taking playing time away from full-time players. Is this a possibility at Ambassadors Baseball?

A: That’s a great question — and it’s one of the biggest frustrations we hear from families who’ve been in other programs. The short answer is no, that’s not how we operate at Ambassadors Baseball.

We believe loyalty should be rewarded. Our full-time players — the ones who commit, train, and represent the program all season — always come first. We don’t bring in guest players to chase trophies or short-term wins at the expense of those who’ve earned their spots.

If a temporary roster addition is ever needed (for example, due to injuries or roster shortages), it’s handled transparently and with the team’s best interests in mind. But make no mistake — our commitment is to the players who wear the Ambassadors uniform full-time.

We’re here to build players, not just teams. That means earning your playing time, keeping it, and knowing it won’t be taken away by a “guest player” parachuting in for a big weekend.
